Evo Viper Sound Moderators

Evo Viper Sound Moderators

This moderator is intended for use with centre fire rifles and has been designed to both reduce muzzle blast, muzzle flash and by acting as an effective muzzle brake it reduces felt recoil. This reduction in noise pollution helps avoid the risk of hearing loss and minimises environmental disturbance. The reduction in both muzzle blast and felt recoil improves shooter comfort and has been shown to be an aid to accuracy without any appreciable effect on bullet velocity. In order to reduce weight the majority of the moderator is manufactured from 7075 T6 aircraft grade aluminium which is then hard anodised to reduce oxidisation and wear. Both the threaded insert and the blast baffle are made from stainless steel.

Viper EVO moderators are available in two standard centre fire versions.
The EVO 8 is aimed at medium capacity cartridges up to 30cal and with charge weights up to 60 grains of powder. As its name suggests it has 8 baffles. A stainless blast baffle, six intermediate aluminium baffles and the end cap which has been internally shaped to act as an additional baffle. Only the stainless blast baffle and the six intermediate baffles are removable for cleaning. It is 260mm (10") long, weighs 532grams (1lb 3oz) and extends approximately 90mm (3.6") beyond the barrel muzzle.

The EVO 5 is aimed at smaller capacity cartridges up to and including .243. It can be used on rifles up to 30 cal where weight is a major issue but will not reduce the muzzle blast as effectively as the larger EVO 8. It has 5 baffles. Its design is similar to the EVO 8 but it has only three intermediate aluminium baffles. It is 175mm (7") long, weighs 425 grams (<1lb) and extends approximately 68mm (2.7") beyond the barrel muzzle.

In addition Specialist moderators based on the EVO design and intended for use on 30 cal magnum riles and rifles in calibres larger than .30, are currently in development

Fitting
After use and when the rifle is in storage the moderator should be removed from the rifle. Carbon deposits build up on the crown of the rifle and should be removed after use. If this is not done the carbon deposits will attract moisture and can form rust spots causing pitting. This often will extend inside the rifling at the rifle muzzle if the rifle is left uncleaned after use. Even Stainless Steel barrels will eventually rust if left untreated. The muzzle thread should be kept lubricated and it is recommended that the threads be periodically treated with suitable light grease.

The moderator is supported at the muzzle thread and by the over barrel bush located in the rear of the moderator. When fitted correctly this makes the moderator mounting very stable and aids concentricity to the barrel bore. This bush must be cut to fit snugly over the barrel and this work should be carried out by the gunsmith at the same time the moderator is fitted. Additional bushes can be supplied to enable the moderator to be used on several different rifles with the same muzzle thread. The Viper EVO moderator is available in a number of different thread types to enable fitting to a variety of barrel profiles
